Flow Engineering:
Transform Performance, Alignment, Confidence, Happiness and Quality
Flow Engineering takes just the best parts Value Stream Mapping and Capability Mapping as a framework of techniques you can use right now, with tools you already have - to discover opportunities, build and share your vision and save hours of toil every week to confidently invest in what's next.
- How to use both Maps and Compasses to drive improvement
- How to build actionable, data-driven maps that make the path clear to everyone
- How to use maps to confidently decide what to tackle and how
Visual Mapping:
How to See Where You're Going By Seeing Where You Are
This experience report will detail my involvement with 3 organizations of 3 different sizes (small startup, small-to-medium enterprise, and giant enterprise) to illustrate how I've used a form of Value Stream Mapping to help them define their current state and leverage data collected in the process to confidently identify (often surprising) risks and opportunities.
- How to step back, visualize and measure to challenge assumptions, gain clarity and share it.
- Removing uncertainty about where to focus, how to communicate and represent flow.
- How to create lean, high impact value stream illustrations to make stronger decisions.
Maps and Compasses:
How to Navigate Software Delivery With Confidence
Too many organizations rely solely on "Compasses" like specific metrics, principles and reference companies (being more like Spotify) instead of pairing that reference with "Maps" of where you are right now, and what surrounds you.I'll introduce my two favourite maps: Value Stream Maps and Capability Maps, and how to use them to move with confidence towards your compass target.
- How Value Stream and Capability Maps help visualize and share where you are right now
- How to pair Compasses with Maps to drive progress in the right direction
- How to build actionable, data-driven maps that make the path clear to everyone
- How to use maps to confidently decide what to tackle and how
Biz/Tech Rosetta Stones:
Using Value Stream and Capability Maps to Speak the Same Language
This workshop will introduce two methods you can use to define, discover and communicate risks and opportunities, regardless of what team, department or silo you find yourself in. We'll examine visual representations of valuable data you can use to have productive conversations, make confident decisions, and align towards making real progress.
- How to use Value Stream Maps and Capability Maps to speak the same language across business and tech
- How to build actionable, data-driven maps that make the path clear to everyone
- How to use maps to confidently decide what to tackle and how

Value Stream Mapping
What It Is
Value Stream Mapping (VSM), also known as "material -and information- flow mapping" began in the peak years of Toyota's manufacturing as a way to reveal waste in manufacturing. It's now used everywhere products are delivered. Traditionally, it's a complicated process and challenging to understand without training, so I developed a simpler form of visualizing the most valuable pieces into what you can see below:
There are 2 key components to a value stream map: Steps and timing.By combining both into a visual map, it's easy for anyone to see where time is being spent, and extract insights about potential improvements. There's much more information that can be layered upon this foundation, but those two components create a powerful asset for making sound decisions with confidence and alignment.Few have used these techniques in software development, but there is no better way to visualize flow, measurement, risks and opportunities than through a value stream map.Read more about Value Stream Mapping here
How It's Different
Value stream mapping is different from many diagrams and illustrations as it includes measurement to reveal insights about the performance of the process.Read more about how Value Stream Mapping is different
